Hornstrandir Reserve, of which Hornbjarg Cape is one of the highlights, is one of Iceland's most beautiful protected natural areas. The deeply indented peninsula forms the northern extremity of the Western Fjords.Hornstrandir was once inhabited; its ancient hamlets can only be reached by boat or on foot. The entire wilderness has been uninhabited since the 1950s. Indeed, the harsh winters and steep fjords were too much for the few farms that once stood here. There are a few old abandoned farmhouses and, above all, vertiginous cliffs colonized by thousands of seabirds.
