Djúpavík, the "deep bay" where Halldór Laxness set one of his novels, is a largely abandoned former herring-fishing center on the Reykjarfjörður fjord. This fishery was very important in the 1930s, until the area was abandoned and herring became scarce. A few kilometers further on, Gjögur is another legendary fishing center, at the entrance to the Reykjarfjörður fjord, now virtually depopulated, but once renowned for its heroic fishermen who hunted Greenland sharks in small open boats.
