This regional center, with a population of around 850, lies at the mouth of the River Blandá, at the head of the Húnaflói. The settlement is relatively recent, having been founded by merchants in the 1870s. The first houses, however, were built on the south bank of the Blandá, as witnessed by Hillebrandshús (1733), Iceland's oldest wooden house. In Blönduós, you'll also find a striking modern church in raw concrete. It overlooks the river where the small island of Hrútey is located, a protected area renowned as a paradise for migratory birds and a reforestation site.
