The site includes a traditional farmhouse and church dating from the turn of the last century. It's one of the last examples of traditional wood and peat architecture to be so well preserved, especially on this scale. The sagas tell us that Snorri Þorfinnsson had the first church built on Glaumbær Farm to please his mother, the legendary explorer Guðríður Þorbjarnardóttir. Born in Iceland, Guðríður had moved with her family to Greenland. After their return to Iceland, Guðríður settled here around 1020. Converted to Christianity, she was a fervent Catholic and founder of the island's first convent for women.
