Hólar is one of Iceland's most important historical sites, having been a Catholic and then Lutheran bishopric from 1106 to 1801. Today, the little village has a population of over a hundred, and is above all an important place of study for Icelanders. You'll find a university specializing in aquaculture, one in equine studies and one in rural tourism. It's at this university that you'll find accommodation, restaurants and swimming. You'll also find some pretty little thatched cottages with peat roofs and one of the country's few stone churches.
