A small town of 1,200 inhabitants, one of Iceland's most northerly, at the northern tip of Tröllaskagi. The inhabitants have always depended on the ocean and fishing, as the area was famous for its herring until it disappeared from Icelandic waters. In 2006, the inhabitants of Siglufjörður and Ólafsfjörður voted to create a joint municipality called Fjallabyggð (population 2,300). The construction of the tunnel linking the two towns, together with the renewal of the marina, are giving a new lease of life to this small town in northern Iceland, popular with Icelanders and foreigners alike.
