Kverkfjöll, "the mountains of the gorge", is one of the glaciers that border Vatnajökull to the north. Higher than the ice cap, it rises to 1,929 m. Here, you can observe all the manifestations of a glacier. Water mixes with fire: it's also a geothermal site, where the heat melts the ice, dominating a lava desert. The area is dotted with hot springs that gush out from beneath the glacier, as well as sub-glacial caves created by the warm waters. Beware, however, of venturing into these caves on your own, as falling blocks of ice and the possible presence of sulphur are not uncommon.
