Askja is a volcano with a mythical name, looming at the very end of the long F88 trail across the inland volcanic desert to the northern limit of Vatnajökull. The imposing caldera contains two lakes, a large, cold-water lake (Öskjuvatn) and a small, deep, warm-water lake (Víti or "hell").For this day out in central Iceland, bring food, warm clothes (due to the altitude) and good walking shoes. Accommodation is scarce, but if you need it, you can stop off at the Dreki hut, which offers a communal kitchen and heated room. You can also camp here, sheltered from the wind, in decent conditions.
