Mývatn, Iceland's fourth-largest lake (38 km²), is one of the country's richest geological and ornithological sites. It has been a nature reserve since 1976. The climate is relatively dry and warm for its latitude. Reykjahlíð, on the north shore, and Skútustaðir to the south, are the only settlements in the region. Reykjahlíð is to some extent the tourist center of the lake region. The lake's fairly flat shores make it easy to walk around. There are plenty of opportunities for hiking, and many geothermal sites. Several trails are signposted, and it's best not to stray from them.
