Kirkjubæjarklaustur ("convent farm church"), often abbreviated to just Klaustur, is set in a volcanic landscape, in the middle of a huge lava field called Elðraun ("the lava of fire"), in memory of the disastrous eruption of Laki in 1783. This eruption was probably the largest in human history, with lava flows covering 580 km² of farms and fertile land. This small town of less than 150 inhabitants, from which buses leave for Landmannalaugar and Lakagígar, is not very interesting in itself, despite several points of interest (Systrafoss waterfall, Kirkjugólf basalt formations...).
