At the south-eastern end of the island, Vík í Mýrdal is a must-see. At Vík í Mýrdal, the sandy plain changes abruptly into cliffs on the coast and continues into the mountains inland. In the sea, the black silhouettes of the volcanic peaks, the Reynisdrangar, stand out on the horizon. With spikes up to 66 m high, these isolated reefs lie there like a gigantic three-masted ship aground on the shallows. According to legend, the Reynisdrangar have existed since two trolls tried to pull a shipwrecked boat onto the beach. But they were delayed in their lowly task and, at the first rays of the sun, remained petrified.
