The Hvolsvöllur region is best known as the setting for one of Iceland's most famous sagas, the Saga of Njáll the Burnt. This saga is a true masterpiece, captivating by its literary perfection, its complexity and the light it casts on the theme of destiny. In the face of destiny, the heroes - be they bóndi (peasants) or godars (chief priests) - display an unflinching, impassive, haughty and almost icy composure. This is also the home of the Eystri-Rangá, one of the country's finest salmon rivers. The farms of Hlíðarendi and Bergsthórshvoll are truly historic sites.
