Hekla is a large strato-volcano rising to 1,491 m. The most active volcano in Iceland, it has erupted several times, in 1970, 1980, 1991 and 2000, and can erupt at any time, as it is also the most unpredictable. In July 2011, magma movements were detected, but no eruption occurred. Its snow-covered summit is surrounded by black lava. For a close-up view of the famous volcano, Leirubakki (route 26) and trail 225 (13 km further north) are among the best places to visit. Incidentally, Hekla was not climbed until 1750, when it was believed to be the gateway to the underworld...
