This town of about 7,620 inhabitants owes its name to the rapids of the river Ölfusá, on whose banks it is situated. Originally, it was just a settlement with a single isolated farm. The first bridge built over the mighty Ölfusá in 1891 opened the area to trade and the outside world. Now the administrative centre of South Iceland, the small town has developed mainly through agriculture and the surrounding fat land. If it lacks charm, Selfoss offers tourists cultural facilities (museum, bookstore), a swimming pool, a riverside golf course and a campground, and a starting point for excursions.
