Theater and museum with beautiful collections of sculptures and ancient objects in Verona.

Theatre. Built in the 1st century B.C. by digging a hemicycle in the shape of an inverted cone into a hill, as was done for Greek theatres, the theatre is an excellent high observation point from which to enjoy a superb view of Verona. During the Middle Ages, the area was occupied by houses and churches. The site was uncovered during extensive demolition and excavation work in the 19th century and was acquired by the municipality in 1904. It is the fact that it was buried for several centuries that has guaranteed its excellent state of preservation.

Museum. The Roman archaeological museum, housed in the former convent of the Gesuati order dating back to the 15th century, is worth a visit. To reach the museum, the crossing of the theatre is a must. The tour begins on the5th floor with an interesting introduction to Roman Verona. The museum then moves on to the world of the necropolis (the rare and original Doctor's Tomb, found complete with all the surgical instruments of the Roman era) and the more exciting world of entertainment, with a long section dedicated to the Veronese Arena. There is also a fine collection of marble and bronze sculptures and ancient objects, as well as a set of Roman inscriptions on stone, and ex-votos to the divinities; the convent chapel (1432), still decorated with a few frescoes, now disused, houses a set of black and white or polychrome mosaics.
