Although the village has been inhabited since prehistoric times, it was in medieval times that Thaon began to develop, thanks to its mills, farms and stone quarries, which were exploited until the early 19th century. Located northwest of Caen, the commune is crossed by a small river, the Mue, and is famous for its 12th-century Saint-Pierre church - one of the most interesting Romanesque churches in Normandy - and its 18th-century château. Not to be missed in the area: the Coleaux family wine cellar in Rosel, and Ferme de Billy in Rots, a producer and harvester of cider apples and one of the best brunches in the region!
