The lunar landscapes of Lake Abbe, inherited from the dawn of time, are fascinating. The shores of the lake stretch as far as the eye can see. A multitude of limestone chimneys, surrounded by bubbling springs, dot the plain. Some Djiboutians will tell you that this is a setting that would have been used for the filming of the 1968 movie Planet of the Apes. In reality, the film was shot in Hollywood studios and in the Arizona desert (hence some similarities). All this can nevertheless only tickle your curiosity, inciting you to come and see this place which marks the northern end of the African rift. The road is quite long and rocky, but the reward is worth it: the landscape is unique. The lake is not so desolate. The rock and sand, of different colours and consistencies, welcome birds, herds and nomads. In the evening, you can hear hyenas and jackals, numerous in the region. Sensation guaranteed! Before going there. The only way to get to Lake Abbe is to take the N1 and then the N6 after Dikhil, in a good 4x4. The round trip in the day is not possible because the track is bad (especially the last kilometers), and it would be a pity not to take the time to linger there. Count one night on the spot. Needless to say, it is imperative to organize your trip from the capital. All travel agencies offer this major destination. We advise you to book as soon as possible. A guide is highly recommended, almost necessary, first of all because he knows the track and there is plenty of room to get lost, then he will know how to stop at the best viewpoints along the road and the alignment of the chimneys. The highlights of the visit are the contemplation of the lake, at sunrise, with the flight of the pink flamingos if they deign to fly away (they are sometimes content to withdraw on the surface of the lake as you approach) and, in the early evening, for a sunset behind the chimneys, which coincides with the return of the herds. Beware, midges and mosquitoes are numerous. Remember to bring hiking boots (and spare shoes), long sleeves and trousers, binoculars, mosquito repellent, torch, sun cream and plenty of water (cooler)
