The region of Assamo, about thirty kilometers from Ali Sabieh, is little known to tourists. This is not true. The landscapes are unique. In Afar language, "Assamo" means "red hair" and refers to the particular color of the mountains of this region, which will dazzle you by their artistic compositions. The impressive sandstone peaks between 900 and 1,200 m (Mount Dadin in the east at 1,070 m and Mount Arrey in the west at 1,292 m) are a highlight. The small town of Assamo and its border post are perched on a rocky outcrop. The fort, with its blindingly white crenellated walls, overlooks the Assamo wadi, which meanders between the rocky walls. Occupied by Djibouti soldiers who control the border zone, it is not open to visitors. The border post is both a place of surveillance and a point of assistance for the nomadic populations of the region. But Assamo is also a beautiful protected natural land area (managed by the Decan association), mentioned by Unesco. With a surface area of 15 km2, it is the natural habitat of the precious Beira antelope, which lives only in the arid and mountainous reliefs of this region of the Horn of Africa and which was believed to be extinct. Here, thanks to the efforts and actions of preservation and protection of its natural environment, the Beira antelope finds a more serene life. And it is for her that the Assamo camp was created in 2016. The totality of the funds collected is entirely reused for the protection of the sites protected by the Decan association
