Practical information : Accomodation Djibouti
Budget & Tips
Djibouti's hotel facilities are improving, but neither the budget nor the boutique hotel lover will be satisfied. At the bottom of the scale, there are cheap hotels with no comfort. Then the prices climb very quickly. It's hard to find a decent room for less than €50. The most represented range is that of hotels at 80-120 €. Outside Djibouti City, the choice is very limited. Apart from a few modest establishments and three good addresses on the seaside towards Obock and Tadjourah, the camps are the main accommodation offer (100% authentic) outside the capital
To be booked
A trip to Djibouti cannot be improvised. The camps, located outside the cities, can generally not accommodate more than 15 people and require logistics that can not be organized at the last moment, it is therefore preferable to plan in advance. In Djibouti-City, the hotel offer is relatively important, however the average structures of quality are not so numerous so it is better to anticipate.
What's very local
Guest houses are almost non-existent in Djibouti. Only La Terrasse, in Djibouti City, in the "Heron" district, is an exception. And a beautiful exception! In town, the mid-range hotels are generally well kept and clean, and meet international standards, even if the tastes and colors are not always in line with expectations. Apart from the hotels in the capital and a few others in the provinces, the camps are a typical accommodation offer for all the travellers eager for local culture and who want to get off the beaten track. These camps are composed of several paillotes or daboytas (traditional Afar hut), very basic, equipped with mats on the ground, one or several beds with mattresses, sheets, pillows, blankets and mosquito nets. For your personal comfort, we recommend that you bring your own duvet or sheet, towel and mosquito repellent. The communal areas include the dining area (where meals are taken together), the sanitary facilities (showers and toilets) and the kitchen area. Solar panels and/or generators provide the camps with electricity. Depending on the location (sea or mountain), a certain number of activities are associated and proposed. In all cases, the camps in Djibouti are set up in the middle of nature, in beautiful places, accessible only by 4x4 (it is worth it!), sometimes near a village, which facilitates meetings with local communities. You can buy honey, local handicrafts, fruits and vegetables. All in all, a trip to Djibouti will never be complete without an authentic stay in one of these enchanting places for at least one or two nights
For food lovers
For those with a sweet tooth, every Friday, the luxury hotels (Palace Kempinski and Sheraton, in particular) offer packages that include brunch (a gargantuan international buffet) with access to the pool for the day.
Smokers
No hotel is completely smoke-free, but most hotels have exclusively smoke-free rooms. Newer hotels are more compliant.
