On the western shore of Lake Maggiore, these five small islands are one of Italy's proud heritage sites. Only three of them can be visited. The pearl of Lake Maggiore, this archipelago bears the name of a great Milanese family, the Borromeos, who acquired the two largest islands, Isola Madre and Isola Bella, in the 15th century. Today, their heirs continue to promote and maintain the lush hanging gardens, palaces and lakeside terraces, complete with chapels, fountains and romantic grottoes. Owned by the municipality of Stresa, Isola dei Pescatori is still inhabited by a community of fishermen and lives on more than just tourism.
