Capital of the Lower Valtellina, this large town has an interesting historical centre. In the central square you can see the beautiful baroque façade of the collegiate church of San Giovanni Battista (1680). In Via Malacrida, the Palazzo Malacrida (1762) is the work of the famous architect Pietro Solari; although elegant for being just a "mountain palace", it still has stucco decorations, frescoes and a beautiful Italian garden inside. In the town's shops you can also buy local handicrafts, pezzotti valtellinesi, colourful carpets woven from strips of plain fabric woven with hemp thread.
