The city of a hundred towers, symbols of the power of the families of notables.
Once known as "the city of a hundred towers" Pavia now has only five: three in Piazza Leonardo da Vinci and two in Via Luigi Porta. Built between the 11th and 12th centuries, they are very similar to each other: square in plan, made of red brick, no decoration except for small narrow windows. Their function is still mysterious; their small size inside does not suggest that they were intended for military defence. Rather, they would have been the symbol of the power of the families of notables.

impressionnant
