Kroměříž alone warrants a stopover: it is one of the first towns on the hit parade of Moravian architectural riches. Originally Romanesque, it underwent a Renaissance dressing before undergoing an almost total renovation after its destruction by the Swedes in 1643. Grandiose reconstruction work was undertaken by the Archbishop of Olomouc, Charles of Liechtenstein, and a Baroque wave swept over Kroměříž. Everything was reorganized by the Italian architects Luchese and Tencolla. Nevertheless, the Gothic street pattern prevails throughout the historic center and many houses have retained a Gothic structure.
