168 km west of Prague, and very close to the German border, Františkovy Lázně ends the "thermal triangle." More discreet than its two sister spas and imbued with a nostalgia reinforced by an apparent decrepitude, the resort was founded in 1735 and renamed in the early 19th century in honor of Austrian Emperor Franz I. But the real promoters of the spa were all the personalities who, from Goethe to Beethoven, frequented the city. The curative effects of its twenty-four mineral springs are world-renowned and, as this resort is less lavish than the two previous ones, you are likely to meet more real curists than tourists. If you decide to continue on from Mariánské Lázně, you'll discover neoclassical architecture and pretty gardens that are worth a visit. Given the proximity to Germany, expect to meet only Germans, curists or tourists!
