Karlovy Vary is a quiet town with only a few peaks of visitors during the summer months, when people come to enjoy the benefits of the local thermal water. But during the film festival, which has been held every year in early July since 1946, the 49,000 or so inhabitants see their numbers double and a colourful crowd invades the streets. Familiarize yourself with the Cyrillic language, as the Russians, who own most of the town's businesses, come every year by the tens of thousands: many menus are posted in Russian before they are in Czech.
