Hradec Kralové is divided into the old town (Staré Město) and the new town (Nové Město). The old town is located in the east, on the left bank of the Elbe. It sees all styles, from Gothic to Renaissance, from Baroque to Classical, rubbing shoulders in great harmony. The two main (almost contiguous) squares, Velké Náměstí (the "big square") and Malé Náměstí (the "little square"), are good examples. At the beginning of the 20th century, the city grew considerably, resulting in the destruction of the huge fortification system developed in 1750 to counter the Prussians. The urban expansion, on both sides of the Elbe (but especially on the right bank), was entrusted to two famous architects: Jan Kotěra (1871-1923) and Josef Gočár (1880-1945). Avenues, squares, sober buildings, parks, everything was redesigned in this large area between the train station and the old town. Fortunately, the communist regime did not try to change these developments. It remains to preserve or embellish this heritage. Some of you will like it, others not at all. It's up to you.
