Famous for its vineyards, especially those of Burgundy, the city is located 32 km north of Prague, where the Vltava and Elbe rivers meet. It is without a doubt one of the jewels of the region. It is also famous for its 9th century castle, second residence of the queen from the 13th century. The whole constitutes a very homogeneous city: ideal to spend a tourist day, with in premium of the wine tastings. The name of the city comes from its position on a hill. The town was first mentioned in the 9th century when a fortress was built by the Slavic tribe of Pšov. One of them, Ludmilla, married a member of the royal dynasty and became queen. Despite this, she preferred to stay in Mělnik and raised her son Wenceslas there, who, like her, would later become patron saint of Bohemia. Mělnik would over time become the castle of queens and royal widows, who chose to follow Ludmilla's example.
