Kutná Hora (20,500 inhabitants) is a small Prague, rich and poor at the same time, whose time of glory goes back a few centuries. The discovery of silver and copper seams in the hills of Kutná Hora in the 13th century was the reason for its development and fame. The name of the town itself is a testimony to this, as Kutná Hora literally means "mountain of the mine". The wealth from silver mining benefited the architecture of the whole town. Around 1550, the town was in its twilight years, and the exhaustion of the main deposits quickly plunged the town into oblivion. Since 1996, Kutná Hora has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
