50 km from Galitch, this wetland and forest region is the homeland of Saint Abraham, founder of Epiphany Monastery in Rostov. In revolutionary Russian literature, Tchoukhloma is the symbol of grey and provincialism; The earth is infertile, and the villages keep the ancient look of the earth properties. Many of its old wooden churches were transferred to Kostroma, at the museum of wood architecture, and in particular the famous church of the village of Kholm, 1552, in the corner of the village's central square, which became an important shopping centre. We were mainly exporting furs and skins, and we were importing Kostroma and the surrounding regions into wine and vodka. The most beautiful monument of Tchoukhloma is the monastery Abramiev Gorodetski, whose ciselé clocher stands out in the sky, visible to miles at the round. In the last century, this quiet village, both forested and swampy, was nicknamed the "bear corner". The poet and playwright Pavel Aleksandrovich Katenine (Pushkin's friend) who lived in one of Tchoukhloma's properties played a major role in the décembristes movement in 1905. Today, this small village of five thousand inhabitants is known across borders for golden carassins (carp cousins) that fishing in the waters of its lake is exported. Tchoukhloma is a very good fishing corner for the amateurs, sailing trips for several days are organised by the tourist office of Kostroma. The city is also known for the richness of its craft.
