Located 180 km from Moscow (2h40 by car or 2h by train from Kursky station), the city has existed since at least 1146, before becoming a fortress in the 16th century with its magnificent kremlin, then in the 18th century a renowned centre of metallurgy and arms production. It is because of this military industry, still in use today, that Toula was attacked by the Nazis and its resistance earned it the title of heroic city in the USSR. In addition to being the capital of the samovar, Tula is famous for being the city of Tolstoy and for its gingerbread: the prianikis
