This city has always been a strategic fortress protecting the south of Moscow and an important Orthodox religious centre with many monasteries. For its sorrow and devotion, it has been looted four times by the Tatars but has always risen again: its red brick kremlin has survived for centuries since its construction in the 16th century. Today, Kolomna is visited for its cathedral, its ancient architecture, its small preserved wooden houses and for its monasteries. During the Soviet era many strategic industries surrounded the city with an aura of mystery and secrecy.
