19 km from Moscow, the town of Mitischi (140 000!) is the centre of the district that bears its name. From a long merchant tradition - its name comes from the old era, the price lifted on the goods transported by roads or waterways - the city enjoys an ideal location at the crossing of the road to Yaroslavl and the river of Moscow, between the river De and the Kliasma (tributary of the Volga).Today, although these rivers are no longer navigable, the city retains, in another form, an important role in transport: there are trucks, subway cars and railways. Mitischi also has a factory specialized in the casting of statues.
