On the west bank of the Mersey, Port Sunlight offers an astonishing example of utopia. The village was designed by the industrialist William Hesketh Lift, for the workers of his soap factory. Here, all the houses are different and equipped with small private gardens. The architects have left their imagination free, adorning the balconies and the doorway of doors or windows. The facades are punctuated by colombages with fanciful cutting and chimneys often have exuberant shapes. At that time, a true community spirit prevailed in these places which included a school, a gym, a pension fund and a church. In 1893, Lift organised an excursion to Blackpool for its employees and their families… 2 400 people in total! In addition to these surprising anecdotes at the Port Sunlight Museum, the village has a world-renowned art gallery for the quality of its collection of paintings, Victorian furniture and Chinese vases. As well as being a norme boss, Lift was an end collector of art, who built this museum in the memory of his wife in 1922. If you have some time to spend on this amazing territory, do not hesitate to explore the rest of the Wirral Peninsula.
