The largest city on the island with 30,000 inhabitants, Ryde is a friendly little coastal town. North-east of the Wight, it is not the most touristic destination but it has a remarkable pier, which happens to be even the oldest in the United Kingdom (1814) and the fourth longest (681 meters). Its growth as a seaside resort came after the merger of the villages of Upper Ryde and Lower Ryde in the 19th century, whose influence is still visible in the architecture of the town centre and seafront. The resort's vast expanses of sand are revealed at low tide to the delight of bathers.
