At the center of the island, Newport is the commercial hub of the island community. Newport is a dynamic, multicultural city, steeped in a rich industrial heritage, where traditional industries rub shoulders with the new electronics and financial services sectors. The Normans settled in Newport and built a castle on the banks of the River Usk in the 12th century, the remains of which you can see today. Admittedly, the town is not of immense architectural or tourist interest, but it does offer a number of attractions, as well as being the island's main public transport hub.
