Cowes, a major centre of the sailing world and a pleasant port, is built on the banks of the Solent. This former marina faces the south coast of England and is bordered by the Medina, which separates it from its neighbour East Cowes. East Cowes is connected to the Medina by a ferry and was an important shipyard, building destroyers, submarines, lifeboats and Sir Malcolm Campbell's Bluebird, which broke the speed record in 1936. If you decide to go a little further south, Newport is the capital of the Isle of Wight and has little interest except for its administrative and commercial side.
