Sandwich has the distinction of having one of the most intact medieval streets in the whole of England, on Strand Street. This charming little town has many attractions for visitors: The Pilgrims (two 14th-century houses), Saint Peter's Street, where you'll find a former medieval prison, Saint Mary's Church, built by the Normans, and Saint Clement's Church, dating from the Saxons and rebuilt with a Romanesque tower. Another must-see is Holy Ghost, an alleyway barely a metre wide. Sandwich is also one of the famous "Cinque Ports" which, in the Middle Ages, had to provide the king with a fleet in times of war.
