Lamma (13.5 km ²) is the 3 rd island of the territory for its surface (after Lantau and Hong Kong) and its population is 6,000 inhabitants of 60 different nationalities during the last count! If one can be disappointed by the presence of an electric power plant near the port, which is constantly expanding (and supplying the entire electricity from Hong Kong Island), Lamma remains one of the best preserved territories. It is for its gentleness that many, both Westerners and Chinese, chose to reside there.Lamma was said to have a bad Feng Shui, which is why the Chinese preferred him to other parts of the territory. The lower price of rents and beauty made them change their mind. You never get tired of a beautiful boat ride between Lamma and Central. Moreover, returning to Lamma in the evening after a day under high pressure is tantamount to returning to a haven of peace. Its two lovely fishing harbors (Sok Kwu Wan west and Yung Shue Wan to the east) are served by regular ferries departing from Central. Lamma is a mountainous island where cars are banned, with few cultivable land. It is easy to understand the attractiveness of Westerners to this island. New shops can accommodate and sell adapted products: organic food and ethnic crafts. We're also making nice walks on Lamma. Among other things, the island's tower is possible on a walkway or mountain ridges, crossing an astonishing lush vegetation. It takes about two hours to reach the two villages of Sok Kwu Wan and Yung Shue Wan. Bicycles can also be hired. The island has beautiful beaches, both of which are easily accessible. Lo So Shing, one of the most beautiful, is close to the trail leading to Sok Kwu Wan. Walkers can climb to the top of the Stenhouse Mountain, which offers a beautiful panorama on the sea, Lamma and Hong Kong. Generally, trails, beaches and villages are very well indicated.Yung Shue Wan («the Bay of Banians»), the main village, occupies the northwest of the island. Main Street, the central street, is surrounded by seafood restaurants, pubs, cafes and restaurants offering western cuisine, not forgetting a small market and other shops. The majority of the community - Chinese and Western - is concentrated on the scene and in hill-flanked houses.Located at the end of Main Street, the Tin Hau Temple, centenary, is dedicated, as its name suggests, to the goddess of the sea. Two granite lions keep the temple entrance. Inside, behind a red screen (to prevent bad spirits from entering), a socket contains the representations of Tin Hau emperee and veiled. The main walk, one hour long, can go to Sok Kwu Wan. It follows a narrow, mountainous path. It offers beautiful panoramic views of Hong Kong and the other islands, the Sok Kwu Wan Bay and its fish farms. Both beaches, Hung Shing Yeh and Lo So Shing, allow a pleasant stopover. Other trails (right before arriving at Sok Ku Wan) provide the opportunity to make beautiful walks on the mountain ridge or to tour the island (about 3 and a half hours from Yung Shue Wan) on a beautiful trail. You can access other beautiful beaches after having walked in a beautiful tropical nature, passing through Chinese villages forgotten by time. Chow Yun Fat, the famous film actor, is from one of them.Sok Kwu Wan has its reputation as its many restaurant terraces lined by the edge of the water. This village is also accessible by kaidos from the port of Aberdeen.
