During the 1980s, the city, which today has fewer than 83,000 inhabitants, expanded at a dizzying pace, and thousands of Europeans bought houses and apartments there. Previously, it lived on its salt marshes and the production of salt. Every year in August, the Habaneras festival is held, in memory of Cuba, the lost colony. It is held in part at the "Era de la Sal" pier, which dates back to the 18th century and was in operation until 1958. But its streets, too, are filled with Caribbean melodies. Information Tourist Office: Paseo Vista Alegre, s/n.
