Its origins date back to Roman times when Portus Illicitanus was still used as a port by the city of Elche. Today, this city of more than 34,000 inhabitants is still a renowned port, but it has above all become a seaside resort, very popular from April onwards for its eleven kilometers of white sandy beaches, facing south. In winter, it welcomes many foreign retirees, especially from Great Britain, who go there to enjoy its microclimate. It is the closest point of embarkation to visit the island of Tabarca.
