It is an ancient Roman and Arab city. Its port, which has a natural exit to the sea, is the main embarkation point for the Balearic Islands. It is a family seaside resort of 42,900 inhabitants, crowded in summer, but the white fishermen's houses at the foot of the castle still retain their old-fashioned charm. Go up to the castle via Calle San Francisco: it's worth a look. The town lies between the 751-meter-high rocky outcrop known as El Mango and the sea.
