This seaside town is one of the most important destinations in the Castellón region. Don't be frightened when you arrive here, as the number of buildings that follow the coastline almost without interruption until Benicarló, and which have even nibbled away at the nearest mountain, is quite impressive. The little jewel is the citadel. Situated on a peninsula bordered by two beaches, the long beach to the north and the smaller one to the south, the old town with its pretty white houses has remained intact within its walls. Inside, narrow stone streets wind their way up to the castle, making the motorcycle the indispensable vehicle of the inhabitants of Peñiscola. At the top, the 14th-century fortress castle stands on an imposing rock, 64 meters above the sea. This is an appropriate location since it was the last refuge of the antipope Benedict XIII, known as Pope Luna. Indeed, after having been elected by the cardinals of Avignon, he was deposed during the Council of Constance and had to abdicate in favor of Pope Boniface IX. The election of the latter by the Roman cardinals sounded the death knell of the great schism of the West. Part of the network of the most beautiful villages in Spain, this destination was also used as a filming location for the sixth season of Game of Thrones, but also for many films. If the destination is full in the summer, we advise you to go in spring or in October, when the waters are still mild and allow bathing in a postcard setting.
