Today it has more than 130,000 inhabitants, yet until a few years ago, Tarragona was a small, quiet, residential Mediterranean city. Since then, its structure has changed with the installation of several oil refineries and an important industrial area, including the largest petrochemical complex in Spain. Listed as a World Heritage Site by Unesco since November 2000, Tarragona offers three facets: Roman, medieval and modern. With a good tourist infrastructure, well developed sites, affordable entrance fees and an interesting museum of contemporary art, this city with a very rich historical heritage is very pleasant to visit.Festivities. As the capital of the province, Tarragona hosts numerous festivals and celebrations throughout the year. It would be futile to present here all the events organized from January to December, as they are so numerous. However, you will find the most important ones in our Agenda file (at the beginning of the book). To find out more about the many events organized in the city, visit www.tarragonaturisme.cat
