Capital of the Alt Penedès county, Vilafranca (40,000 inhabitants) is the capital of wine. Its famous wines have favoured the development of wine tourism and the prosperity of the whole region. The city preserves an interesting Gothic heritage, with the Basilica of Santa Maria (13th century) and the old royal palace (13th century), which is home to the Museum of Catalan Wine Cultures. The monument dedicated to the Castellers of Vilafranca, in Plaça Jaume I, bears witness to the importance of this tradition. At the end of August, the Festa Major de Vilafranca is the occasion to admire great demonstrations during the Sant Fèlix.
