Khojand would be the mythical Alexandria Eskhate, founded by Alexander the Great in the fourth century BC, its location at the gates of the fertile Ferghana valley on the main shopping road attracted a multitude of suitors. It was successively conquered and destroyed by the Arabs in 711, by Gengis Khan in 1220, then, in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, became a permanent issue between the khanat of Boukhara and Kokand khanat. It was incorporated into the Russian Empire in 1866.The second city of Tajikistan, Khojand, known as Leninabad until 1991, is now the economic and industrial center of the region. A Tajik town populated by the vast majority of Uzbeks, it is a perfect illustration of the perverse pervert of the Central Asian republics planned by Stalin. At the beginning of the century, the city had 198 mosques and 20 madrasas. Of course, it remains only a small part, but the city's interest is greatly enhanced by its bazaar.
