This city is about hours drive from Dushanbe and kilometres from Khojand. It is built on the site of a city born in the th century BC, appointed at the time Oura-Tioube. The ancient city that the Greeks named Kiropol changed several times - Oursepor, Ousrouchan, Fagkat - and took that of Oura-Tioube or Ouro-Teppa than in the th century. The name of Istaravshan was given to him very recently. You can see the ruins of the old town on the outskirts of Istaravshan. The Khanate De and the Bukhara khanate competed in the region for several centuries and, in 1868, Oura-Tioube was attached to the Russian Empire. It was a town of merchants and craftsmen, cobblers, ceramists, sculptors on wood, abbé… Makers were particularly well-reputed and the Couteaux-Tioube knives still remain very sought. Chittari, hand-printed cotton, are still manufactured according to the techniques of the th century. Despite a city-built downtown, Istaravshan has kept the colours of the Orient and the old town, although densely reduced in size, preserves its charm.
