The city of Shymkent will be the first point of contact with Kazakhstan for travellers from Tashkent to Uzbekistan. For those arriving from Almaty and want to cut the trip to Turkestan twice, it is about the only way to take steps by train or bus. The city has no special tourist interest, but it is nevertheless pleasant despite its very Soviet aspect, and one can spend a good half day or a night before continuing its road to Almaty or Turkestan. Don't be frightened by the number of casinos: they are banned in Uzbekistan and Uzbeks frequently pass the border to play in Kazakhstan, where they are allowed. On the other hand, beware of nocturnal wildlife and, if you play yourself, avoid spreading your winnings too thinly if you have done so!
