Located 200 km north of Astana, the spa town of Bourabay (under its Russian name Borovoye until 2005) is a favorite holiday destination for the capital's inhabitants. This region of wooded mountains interspersed with lakes is nicknamed "the Switzerland of Kazakhstan" by the capital's Nur-Sultan residents, who come here for weekends and summer vacations to escape the scorching heat of the steppes. Swimming, fishing, water sports and hiking are just some of Bourabay's attractions. Out of season, the town is of little interest: most hotels are closed and activity is reduced to zero.
