The area of Terni has been inhabited since prehistoric times, but the town developed mainly from the 13th century onwards thanks to its privileged position between Florence and Abruzzo. After trade came industry, favoured by readily available hydroelectric power. It is this modern aspect that characterizes the city today, an aspect that is partly due to the Second World War, which caused almost all the old monuments to disappear under the bombs.
