Gubbio, the quintessential medieval town, is a unique ensemble. Its history goes back a long way, and is intertwined with that of Umbria's oldest populations. With its ochre-colored buildings, towers and palaces set on the slopes of Mount Ugino, the city is a contrast of contrasts. Pedestrians will notice that five parallel streets have different levels on the mountain slope and are linked by alleys and staircases. The structure of the buildings is predominantly Romanesque, with ogival arches. The urban landscape is dominated by the mighty mole of the Palazzo dei Consoli, a symbol of medieval Gubbio.
